Transport should be

easy for everyone

We're launching a new transport subsidy to better support your local travel needs, fueled by your DSS flexible funding. Getting where you need to go should be affordable, accessible, and stress-free every day.

JOIN THE WAITLIST

As an Accessible Rideshare Group member, you can use your Individualised Funding or Enabling Good Lives budget to subsidise the price of Uber ride fares by 78%.

How it works

1. Join

Sign up to become a member. We'll send you an invoice to deposit into your subsidy balance, which can be claimed through your IF Host as a disability support expense.

2. Activate

Once we receive your deposit, we'll email you an invitation code. Enter this code in your Uber app to activate your subsidy. What’s Uber?

3. Travel

Use Uber for everyday travel. Your subsidy covers 78% of each fare automatically. You'll only pay the remaining 22% directly via Uber.

4. Track

Log in to your member portal to track your subsidy usage, review trip activity, and request balance top-ups easily.

Frequently asked questions

  • When you become an Accessible Rideshare Group member and make a deposit to your subsidy balance, you’ll receive an invitation to join our organisation on the Uber app. Once you accept, a 78% subsidy is automatically applied to every Uber ride you take, and that portion is deducted from your subsidy balance after each trip. The remaining 22% of your fare is charged to the payment method you have on file with Uber, so it’s all handled seamlessly at the end of each ride.

  • The Total Mobility Scheme, run by NZTA and Regional Councils, offers discounted transport with local taxis and specialised providers for eligible people, including the disabled community. In its current form the scheme doesn’t always meet your unique day-to-day transport needs.

That’s where we come in! We’re here to give you another option to use Uber to get where you need to go.

  • You’re eligible to join the Accessible Rideshare Group and claim your subsidy balance as a disability support expense if you receive Individualised Funding or an Enabling Good Lives budget, and

    • You’ve tried the Total Mobility Scheme and, together with your NASC and IF Host, assessed that it doesn’t meet your transport needs (whether that’s affordability, depandability, ease of use, or something else) or

    • You were already using your flexible funding to subsidise rideshare trips before March 2024.

If that’s you, you're all set to become a member!

  • Yes, Uber's app and website are fully accessible if you're using VoiceOver or TalkBack due to blindness or low vision.

You’re welcome to bring your service animal along, as Uber’s policy ensures driver-partners accept passengers accompanied by service animals, complying with New Zealand law.

If you use a foldable wheelchair, walker, cane, or another mobility aid, Uber can accommodate you. Unfortunately, at this time, Uber currently doesn't provide transportation services for motorised wheelchairs in New Zealand.

  • With Uber, you get local transport when you need it—anytime, day or night. No waiting on hold or wondering when (or if) your ride will show up. You’ll see the price upfront, know exactly how far away your driver is, and get real-time updates as your trip progresses.

That said, Uber does offer a lower level of support during pickup and dropoff than some other services in the Total Mobility Scheme. Drivers will typically meet you curbside and can lend a hand but aren’t expected to provide full door-to-door support. It’s a great option if you’re comfortable getting in and out of the vehicle independently or with a little asisstance.

  • Yes, there's a 12% service fee on deposits made to your subsidy balance. This fee helps us cover the administrative costs of delivering your subsidy through the Uber platform. The fee is included in the deposit invoice we send you and is covered by your IF/EGL budget, so you don’t have to worry about any additional payments yourself.

  • Our Accessible Rideshare Group membership launches in April 2026. Join the waitlist now, and you'll be the first to know when we’re up and running.
